Sealants

Sealants are helping to create a generation of youngsters that are nearly cavity free. Statistics show that 1 out of every 3 children between the ages of 5 and 17 have never had a cavity. Dental professionals attribute the fluoride in our water and the use of sealants to bring about this decline in cavities.

Dr. Sarah and Dr. Kristen suggest that all children to have sealants applied to protect the grooved and pitted surfaces of the teeth, especially the back teeth. The application of a sealant is quick and comfortable. Your child will just need one visit. The teeth are first cleaned, conditioned and dried. The sealant is then put onto the grooves of the teeth and allowed to harden with a special light. Your child will be able to eat right away. Dr. Sarah and Dr. Kristen suggest that the six and twelve-year molars have sealants. Many times the permanent premolars and primary molars will also benefit from sealants.

Sealants are very affordable. Most insurance companies cover sealants but call yours first to make sure. Some companies have age and specific tooth limitations.

Sealants are only a step in the plan to keep your child cavity free. You must still make sure that they continue to brush and floss regularly, see the dentist twice a year, eat a balanced diet and limit the amount of snacks and soda.
